ELIZABETH R by Judy Chicago: 1533-1605, England
A woman whose birth was cursed by her father, Henry VIII, who desired a male heir, Elizabeth became one of the greatest rulers of the Western world and one of the most erudite women of the sixteenth century. During her reign, there was an increase in the economic power of England, a decrease in religious strife and a blossoming of female scholarship.
Paintings of the Queen depicted in gorgeous costumes and wide, elaborate ruffs inspired her place setting. The plate is painted in the rich colors traditionally associated with royalty.
